- A soft measuring tape
- Your pet standing or sitting in a relaxed position
- A few quiet seconds while your pet stays still
If you do not have a soft tape, use a non-stretch string, mark where the ends meet, and measure the string against a ruler. Avoid stretchy cord because it can produce a smaller reading than your pet's actual neck circumference.
How to measure your pet's neck
- Remove the current collar. Measure the neck itself rather than measuring over another collar.
- Find the resting position. Wrap the tape around the base of the neck where the decorative collar will naturally sit.
- Keep the tape comfortably snug. The tape should follow the neck without pressing into the coat or skin.
- Allow two fingers for comfort. Check that you can comfortably slide two fingers between the tape and your pet's neck.

What if the measurement falls between sizes?
XCENCORE's size ranges have gaps, so do not automatically move up or down when the measurement sits between two ranges. Three common measuring mistakes
1. Using an old collar's full length
A collar's end-to-end length includes the buckle, hardware, and adjustment area. That number is not the same as the circumference when worn. Measure your pet's neck directly.
2. Pulling the tape too tight
Compressing thick fur or removing all breathing room can lead to an undersized choice. Keep the tape secure but comfortable and use the two-finger check.
3. Measuring the widest part of the head
For XCENCORE collars, measure the neck where the collar rests. Do not substitute the head circumference unless a product page specifically tells you to do so.
Check the fit again when the collar arrives
- Fasten the collar at the intended adjustment point.
- Repeat the two-finger comfort check.
- Make sure the collar does not press into the neck or hang loosely enough to slip unexpectedly.
